New York Magazine, Olivia Nuzzi break up

New York Magazine and a top reporter, Olivia Nuzzi, have split after it was revealed that she had an inappropriate relationship with former independent presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr.

The magazine said it had enlisted the help of the law firm Davis Wright Tremaine to review Nuzzi’s work. Lawyers came to the same conclusion as the magazine’s initial internal review: Nuzzi, the magazine’s Washington reporter, did not publish inaccurate information and showed no evidence of bias in her work.

“Nonetheless, the magazine and Nuzzi agreed that parting ways is the best path forward. Nuzzi is a uniquely talented writer and we are proud to have published her work as our Washington correspondent for nearly eight years,” the magazine wrote. “We wish her the best.”

The magazine said last month that Nuzzi told editors she had a personal relationship while covering the campaign, which was a violation of the company’s standards “around conflicts of interest and disclosures.”

Media critic Oliver Darcy first reported that the former candidate was Kennedy, who has since dropped out of the presidential race and endorsed former President Trump.

Nuzzi was placed on leave while an internal review of her work was conducted. The magazine said that if Nuzzi had known about the relationship, “it would not have continued to cover the presidential campaign.”

The reporter confirmed to the New York Times that earlier in 2024, “some communications between me and a former journalist became personal.”

She said the relationship never became physical and that she did not “report on the subject directly or use them as a source.”

Still, Nuzzi said she regretted her actions and apologized to her colleagues at New York Magazine.
