Kpone-Katamanso confirms two cases of cholera

Kpone (near Tema), October 21, GNA – The Kpone-Katamanso Municipal Health Directorate has issued a health alert after confirming two cholera cases within the municipality and awaiting the results of other suspected cases.

Dr. Kpone-Katamanso Municipal Health Director Esther Priscilla Biamah Danquah confirmed this in an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) on Monday.

Dr. Danquah said the two cases were confirmed late last week, adding that several suspected cases had also been reported from different communities in the municipality.

She assured that health teams were on high alert and stressed the need for intensive public education on cholera prevention, noting that good hygiene practices and sanitation were crucial to prevent the spread of the disease.

“Cholera is mainly spread through contaminated water and food, so we need to educate our residents on maintaining personal and food hygiene, as well as proper waste disposal,” she noted.

She said the municipal health directorate is currently rolling out measures to contain the situation, including the distribution of chlorine for water purification and public health campaigns in the affected areas.

She said her team was working closely with the Kpone-Katamanso Municipal Council to control the situation and prevent the spread of cholera in the area and across the municipality.

Dr. Danquah called on the Assembly and community leaders to support health officials to ensure residents adhered to health protocols and maintained good sanitary practices.

She advised residents to seek immediate medical attention if they experience symptoms such as severe diarrhea or vomiting, which are common symptoms of cholera.

The Ghana Health Service first declared the outbreak of cholera in Ada East and Ada West District on October 11, 2024, after recording a total of nine cases.
