Michael Owen ‘astonished’ by VAR error in Liverpool’s win against Aston Villa | American football

The VAR annulled a ‘stonewall’ penalty in their defeat against Aston Villa (Premier 1)

Michael Owen says he is “astonished” that the VAR did not intervene to award the award Villa Aston a shame in Liverpool2-0 win at Anfield on Saturday night.

Goals from Darwin Nunez and Mohamed Salah It sealed the victory for Arne Slot’s team, which is now five points clear at the top of the Premier League.

However, Villa felt they were denied a clear penalty with the score at 1-0 when Conor Bradley brought down Pau Torres inside the Liverpool area.

The VAR reviewed the incident but did not tell referee David Coote to review his decision on the pitchside monitor.

Owen, however, insists Villa should have been awarded a penalty.

“It’s a penalty, you can’t do that,” the former Liverpool striker told Premier League Productions.

“There is only one blatant tug, Pau Torres is there at the near post, they take him out of that area with a tug on his shirt.

“If the ball goes to the back post and floats over everyone, then I think turning a blind eye didn’t affect the play.”

‘That’s a blatant attraction. I’m amazed, once that went to VAR, amazed they didn’t give a penalty.

“Personally, I think it is a barrier sanction. I don’t think there’s any debate about that, he literally brings it out. It doesn’t matter if you’re pulling it for a minute or a second, it gets you out of there.’

When asked about the incident, Villa manager Unai Emery said: “I only saw Pau Torres’ action. With the VAR, for me it was clearly a penalty because he took Pau Torres’ shirt off.

‘I know that in Europe this is a penalty, but here in England they want to use VAR… I don’t know exactly where. In this situation it was clear.

“I always respect the referees’ decisions and accept them, but for me, when I saw it, with the VAR it was a clear penalty.

“Of course, it was a very important moment of the game because if we had had the opportunity to take the penalty, maybe the game would have been different.

‘I accept the result and the referee’s decision. “I don’t agree and with the players I am sure that we will recover and find our way again for the season.”
