Match of the weekend: Celtic-Glasgow City

It’s the return of the League Cup as we approach the quarter-finals, with one of the “big three” surely eliminated.

This is because Celtic will host Glasgow City, in what we consider the round tie, and will also be broadcast live on BBC Alba from 4pm on Sunday.

It’s a repeat of the 2021 final, which Celtic won 1-0 thanks to a Caitlin Hayes goal, and a repeat of last year’s quarter-final, which Celtic won 3-0.

In the league, things have been a little different this year. City sit top of the SWPL table but are just one point ahead of Rangers and Hearts.

Celtic, meanwhile, have had to deal with the complications of the European group stage for the first time and that will be on coach Elena Sadiku’s mind again when Chelsea visit Celtic Park next Wednesday.

This is the beginning of a very tough streak for Sadiku’s team. After Chelsea, they host Rangers in a pivotal SWPL clash before visiting Stamford Bridge in more Champions League action.

Perhaps that will affect Sadiku’s team selection, but he can rely on the fact that his team has had the better of City in recent encounters. They have won six of the last 10 games, and City have only won twice.

City are also seeking their first League Cup win since 2015, a nearly 10-year wait for a trophy they have won six times in their history.

The other quarterfinals are as follows:

Partick Thistle v Hibernian

Motherwell v Rangers

Boroughmuir Thistle v Aberdeen
