Donald Trump won the presidency Tuesday night, but Ventura County voters favored Kamala Harris.

According to results released Thursday afternoon, 151,463 county residents, or 55%, voted for Harris. Trump won 116,825 votes or about 43%. The results are still incomplete and more counted ballots will be released on Tuesday.

Trump was declared the national winner in a victory that USA Today called decisive and surprising.

The election marked the second time in the last three presidential general elections that Ventura County, once considered a leading county with a near-impeccable record of supporting the national winner – was not in sync with the rest of the country.

Trump’s performance in a county where Democratic voters have a solid lead over Republicans marked improvements from 2020, when he won 38% of the count, and 2016, when he received 37%.

On Tuesday, local voters who favored Trump cited his record during his first term as president.

“At least I know the way,” said Scot Weisse, a civil engineer who dropped off his ballot at a crowded Camarillo Public Library voting center. He said he didn’t know what Harris would have done if she had been elected.

“Kamala Harris has never defined her stance on anything other than abortion rights,” he said.

Others at the polls viewed the election as a referendum on President Joe Biden and his vice president, Harris.

“This country can’t take four more years of what’s happening,” said Scott Grandy, a Ventura Republican who showed up at the polls before they even opened Tuesday morning.

Harris supporters spoke about human rights and what they see as Trump’s threat to democracy. Heather O’Toole of Ventura speculated about the possibility of a Trump victory moments after voting for her opponent. He said he would accept the results. He also said he would be afraid.

“What will America be like next year?” she asked.
