Kyrgios confirms comeback at Australian Open 2025 after predicting ‘Wouldn’t play again’

Nick Kyrgios wants to return to professional tennis at the 2025 Australian Open, despite previously being given a very gloomy prognosis.

The 29-year-old Australian player has not competed properly since the late stages of the 2022 season. It was one of the most successful seasons of his career as he won 37 matches, the most since 2016, when he was victorious 43 times.

Unfortunately, his season ended with a withdrawal from the Japan Open in Tokyo prior to his quarterfinal against Taylor Fritz. He then returned at two off-season exhibition events but did not find much success.

First, he lost at the 2022 Diriyah Tennis Cup to Cameron Norrie in two super tie-break sets, 6-10, 6-10, before also losing both his matches in the World Tennis League. First Felix Auger-Aliassime defeated him 7-5, 6-3, after which Grigor Dimitrov also defeated the Australian 7-6(5), 6-3.

He then played one match in 2023, but it was clear that he could not participate due to a wrist injury. Now it appears Kyrgios is ready to return to the sport, eyeing the 2025 Australian Open as his comeback major.

Speaking in Sydney on a panel at SXSW (South By Southwest), according to the ATP, the Australian tennis player confirmed he would compete in the opening Grand Slam of the 2025 season.

“I’m going to play in the Australian Open this summer. I just miss playing in front of my home crowd. We currently have an audience like Alex de Minaur who plays great tennis.”

Kyrgios also opened up about his injury in more detail, revealing that the surgeon told him he probably wouldn’t be able to play again, but that he just wanted a few more years of his tennis career.

“The injury I had was brutal… The surgeon said I probably wouldn’t be able to play again. But I said whatever, just try to give me two to three more years of my career…”

The 29-year-old’s cold has been ‘brutal’ in recent years but is also seeing the bright side as he now sets his sights on making a comeback and playing in front of the Australian crowd in Melbourne.

“It’s been brutal the last few years, but just being there to play for my own country… I just want to be there, fire up the crowd and play for my own country.”

According to Kyrgios’ words, he probably doesn’t have high expectations when it comes to his comeback. He saw that Dominic Thiem would never be able to return to his top level and that his comeback after a similar injury could fail.

Still, he wants to win a Grand Slam, something he already achieved in doubles. In singles, Kyrgios reached the final of the 2022 Wimbledon Championships before losing to Novak Djokovic.

“Whether it’s good or bad, it will definitely be a lot of fun. I’m looking forward to it… My only motivation to come back and play is to try to win a Grand Slam, and I’ll give it. ” one more shot.”
