Internet defends ‘vulgar’ dance by IIT Bombay students: ‘Refrain from moral policing’ | Popular

The internet is currently debating the definition of vulgarity after footage of a dance performance by students from the prestigious Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay went viral online. The video shows a group of students performing a dance routine to ‘Munni Badnaam’ on stage and has raised eyebrows among a section of the internet who felt the performance was ‘vulgar’ and inappropriate for an educational environment.

According to the YouTube channel ‘IIT Bombay Uncuts’, the dance was performed by students of Hostel 5 of IIT Bombay, considered the country’s premier institution for engineering and technology.

Footage from the dance, as shared on X, shows a student dressed in a crop top and skirt as they dance to Munni Badnaam. Other students also join in the dance, drawing cheers from the audience.

“IIT Bombay vulgar dance, what is your opinion on this?” asked an X user while sharing the video on the social media platform.

The video has gone viral with 1.2 million views and hundreds of comments from people debating whether the performance is vulgar or not.

The critics

Critics of the dance performance had many reservations. “Cheap… it doesn’t seem like people are getting an education here,” said X-user Pihu.

“My opinion about this is: I don’t blame them. From Kapil Sharma Show, Bollywood films, IIFA awards and countless others, these kids have grown up watching perverted dances like this on TV. The subversion has been successful, it is ingrained. Blame the parents and the media,” said another X user.

“Before you question them, first question Bollywood and the entertainment industry. Ask questions of the songwriters and ask questions of the social media influencers. One thing leads to another, like a chain reaction. What you see is a symptom of a syndrome,” one person agreed.

“It’s an item number that describes a woman as a product. If you don’t find this “inappropriate” in an educational institution, then you are brainwashed,” said X user Shawmava Mukherjee.

The followers

However, many people found nothing wrong with the dance at IIT Bombay and noted that the students on stage had worked very hard to secure admission into the institute and now deserved a chance to enjoy college life.

“People who cannot enter the gates of prestigious colleges should refrain from moral supervision of these deserving students,” opined an X user.

“I don’t find anything vulgar,” said another. “If this is considered vulgarity then protest in front of the film studios in Mumbai,” a third added.

“OP has no idea what is happening at IIT Bombay. This won’t even make the top 200,” said one person while referring to the accusation of vulgarity.
