Oakland Mayor Sheng Thao and Alameda County Prosecutor Pamela Price Successfully Recalled

History has been made in Alameda County and Oakland as voters ousted progressive-minded District Attorney Pamela Price and Oakland Mayor Sheng Thao in Tuesday’s election.

The Associated Press released the results of this week’s vote on the district attorney’s impeachment on Friday night. They did not release the results of the mayor’s impeachment, but Mayor Thao issued a statement apparently acknowledging defeat.

At Price’s retirement, 65% of voters said yes to the recall and 34% opposed it..

A group called SAFE, which stands for Save Alameda for All, organized the recall, arguing that Price – a former civil rights attorney – did not prosecute the defendants with harsh enough charges and therefore caused the community to be insecure Price struggled to combat concerns that she was not tough enough on crime and did not provide support to crime victims.

Price rejected those claims, arguing that she was elected on a platform of criminal justice reform.

In 2022, Price won on a post-George Floyd platform, promising not to overcharge or overcriminalize defendants, especially young black and brown people.

But the political tides have changed since then.

Assuming this recall vote is certified on December 5, the Alameda County Board of Supervisors will have to appoint a replacement district attorney. That person will serve for the remainder of the term, which expires in 2026.

A group opposed to the recall, called Protect the Win for Public Safety, and the ACLU of Northern California, opposed the recall, responding that blaming Price “for crime problems that have been decades in the making is blatantly dishonest.”

Now that Price has officially been removed, the highest-ranking official in her office, Assistant District Attorney Royl Roberts, is expected to take over, according to the report. East Bay Times.

It was not immediately clear whether a special election could also be held or whether the acting district attorney would hold the position for a year and a half.

KTVU has reached out to Price for comment but has not yet heard back.

As for the other recall vote in the East Bay, the San Francisco Chronicle calls Mayor Thao’s recall a success, saying voters have chosen to unseat the mayor. The latest results show a similar count: 63.85% in favor of the withdrawal against Thao and 36.15% against.

Mayor Thao issued the following statement saying she would support a smooth transition.

“Oaklanders, thank you for electing me to serve as your mayor. As the first Hmong American woman to become mayor of a major American city, it has been the honor of my life. My goal was to make Oakland a safer, cleaner place and cleaner. and more vibrant. And I’m proud of what we accomplished together. We dramatically reduced crime across the board with a historic 35% reduction in homicides. For the first time in more than a decade, Oakland passed more than a. month without a single murder. Our work literally saved lives. We also resolved hundreds of encampments, we have over 1,500 affordable housing units in development this year alone, we made the largest IT investment in our 9-1-1 infrastructure in two decades, We installed 290 Flock cameras, brought 100,000 happy, spending baseball fans to West Oakland, and paved a record number of miles in Oakland. I’m deeply proud of the progress we created together and I’m committed to ensuring that. Let’s stay the course by supporting a smooth transition. It never has been. It’s always been about Oakland. And the changes we have implemented in these two short years will be felt for generations to come.”

The Oakland Police Officers Union issued a statement claiming “victory” in both recalls and thanking their supporters.

“We stand with Oakland residents in the removal of Mayor Sheng Thao for his defunding of the police and gross fiscal mismanagement that has brought Oakland to the brink of bankruptcy,” the Association’s president’s statement read in part. Oakland Police Officer Hay Nguyen.

They said the retreats symbolize a new day, but acknowledged there is difficult work ahead.
