All benefit checks will arrive in Ontario in December 2024

As winter and holiday costs begin to mount in the coming months, Ontarians may find some relief as a series of benefit checks will be sent to eligible recipients in December. These are the scheduled payment dates for the last month of 2024:

Canadian Pension Plan and Old Age Security

The maximum monthly payment for the Canadian Pension Plan (CPP) for residents over the age of 65 is $1,306.57.

For the Old Age Security (OAS) pension, individuals between the ages of 65 and 74 with an annual income of less than $142,609 are eligible for a monthly payment of up to $707.68. Those age 75 and older with an annual income of less than $148,179 can receive up to $778.45 per month.

Canadian Pension Plan and Old Age Security payments are sent monthly. The final payment is:

Child tax credit

The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) oversees the tax-free monthly Child Tax Credit benefit, intended for eligible families supporting children under the age of 18. The CCB may include child disability benefits and relevant provincial and territorial programs.

The Ontario Child Benefit provides up to $1,607 per child annually, depending on an individual’s net household income and the number of children under the age of 18 in his or her care.

The last payment date is:

Ontario Trillium Benefit

The Ontario Trillium benefit, paid monthly, includes the Ontario Energy and Property Tax Credit, the Northern Ontario Energy Credit and the Ontario Sales Tax Credit. The last term is:

Those between the ages of 18 and 64 could receive an annual amount of up to $1,194. Those age 65 and older can receive up to $1,360 per year.

Carbon price reimbursement

Small and medium-sized businesses in Canada will receive long-awaited carbon price refunds by the end of this year, according to Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland.

The federal government will distribute more than $2.5 billion to approximately 600,000 companies in December.

These payments will cover carbon price revenues collected between 2019 and 2024 in provinces where the federal fuel tax applies.

The amount each company receives depends on its location and workforce size. In addition, the government imposed a 25 percent tariff on certain Chinese-made aluminum and steel products effective October 22, while a 100 percent tariff on Chinese-made electric vehicles came into effect on October 20.

If you have missed some payments, here’s how to get them

Residents who have applied for any of these benefits can check the status of their payments online in their “My Account” if they have created an account on the CRA website.

The Canadian government emphasizes that these controls never expire.

The CRA cannot void the original check and reissue a new one unless the account holder requests it. This process includes verification, which may require completing forms and issuing a replacement check if necessary.

If you have not received a payment or have missed a payment, the CRA suggests waiting ten days from the payment date before reaching out. Those without a CRA account or who have not set up email notifications can check uncashed checks or missed payments by calling 1-800-959-8281.
