Rafael a strong hurricane in the Gulf; Dangerous waves on our beaches.

MOBILE, Alabama (WALA) – Hurricane Rafael remains strong in the Gulf of Mexico, but is not expected to affect the central Gulf Coast. We will face a high risk of rip currents over the next few days and a high surf warning has been issued. Waves of 5 to 7 feet are likely, and we could even see a little beach erosion.

In our forecast, we have a small chance of scattered showers today, but we will remain dry and mostly cloudy. Temperatures remain above average with highs in the 80s.

Weather headlines:

  • Dangerous Rafael Swell
  • Rafael will remain in the Gulf of Mexico
  • Locally warm and muggy conditions
  • A couple of fronts in our forecast

TODAY:

We are starting our day very mild and muggy with temperatures in the 70s. This afternoon we will quickly warm up to 80 degrees under mostly cloudy skies.

Rain chances today will be low, only about 20 to 30%. Most forecast models show that any rain that develops will be quite light.

WEEKEND:

Our Saturday will be very similar to Friday, with temperatures reaching the 80s again and low chances of rain. The sky will be mostly cloudy again.

On Sunday, we may see a few more showers as moisture flows in from the Gulf of Mexico before a front approaches. The chances of rain will be between 30 and 40%. With a higher chance of rain and more cloud cover expected, temperatures will likely only reach a high of 70 degrees.

THE LONG-TERM PROSPECTS:

A front will move through Sunday into Monday, bringing drier conditions next Tuesday and Wednesday. Temperatures until midweek seem to remain warm despite the frontal passage. Moisture will return to the area Wednesday night ahead of another front. Rain chances are still uncertain on this front, but we are getting signs that a cooldown could remain ahead late next week.
