(LONDON) — At least five people have been hospitalized and 62 others detained after a night of violence against Israeli soccer fans in Amsterdam on Thursday night, authorities said.

The violence occurred after a UEFA Europa League match between Israeli football club Maccabi Tel Aviv and Dutch football club Ajax in Amsterdam on Thursday.

Israel’s National Security Headquarters told Israeli citizens staying in Amsterdam to “avoid movements on the street and lock themselves in hotel rooms.”

Dutch Prime Minister Dick Schoof said the situation is now calm and he is “horrified by the anti-Semitic attacks against Israeli citizens.” Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu said he had been in contact with Schoof and called for greater security for Jewish communities in the Netherlands.

Tensions rose in the run-up to last night’s match, with Amsterdam police reporting on Wednesday night that a group of people removed a Palestinian flag from the facade of a building in the city centre, and that police “avoided a confrontation” between a group of visitors and taxi drivers.

Amsterdam police have not yet commented on the incident, but announced on Wednesday night that “a number of security measures” had been taken before the match to ensure “that everything takes place in a safe and orderly manner”, in a publication in X.

Authorities in Amsterdam said there will be additional police on the move in the coming days and extra attention “for the additional security of Jewish institutions and objects.”

Amsterdam authorities will hold a press conference on Friday at 12:00 to announce the additional measures that will be taken today and in the coming days.
