A man who allegedly assaulted an elderly man to death was remanded in custody by the Suva Magistrates Court this afternoon.

Netani Toma, 40, appeared before Magistrate Sufia Hamza charged with one count of murder.

Toma was allegedly under the influence of liquor when he assaulted a 70-year-old man in Namadi settlement in Namadi Heights.

The incident occurred on Saturday.

The elderly man is alleged to have suffered serious injuries and was taken to Colonial War Memorial Hospital, where he died on Tuesday.

The matter has been transferred to the Suva High Court, where it will be heard on the 22nd of this month.
