‘I played in a difficult team’

Kaizer Chiefs’ Wandile Duba has compared himself to Relebohile Mofokeng, let’s take a look at what he learned.

Chiefs forward Duba candidly assesses the contrasting journeys he and Pirates’ rising star Mofokeng have experienced in their young careers. While Duba acknowledges Mofokeng’s impressive achievements, he highlights the different circumstances that shaped their path.

At the age of 19, Mofokeng has already made a significant impact as he recently celebrated his 50th appearance for Orlando Pirates in the MTN8 finals. With two Nedbank Cup and two MTN8 winners’ medals to his name, Mofokeng scored crucial goals in both finals last season and this year. His stats are equally impressive, with nine goals and ten assists in those fifty appearances, marking him as a key contributor for the Buccaneers.

Duba’s struggles amid Chiefs’ instability

In stark contrast, Duba has faced a more challenging environment at Kaizer Chiefs, a club that has suffered from instability, frequent coaching changes and a lack of silverware in recent years. This turbulent atmosphere has undeniably influenced his development and opportunities on the field. “The difference between us is that I played in a struggling team, while he played in a well-structured club with less pressure,” Duba explained.

Despite these obstacles, Duba remains determined to continue his legacy at Chiefs. He credits new coach Nasreddine Nabi for his positive influence, especially for demonstrating Duba’s versatility by deploying him on the wing. “Coach Nabi has really changed my mentality and helps me grow as a player,” Duba said. “I never thought I could play on the wing, but he saw my speed and intelligence and believed I could do it. I’m happy that I can play where the coach needs me.”

The future: talented players with unique journeys

Mofokeng thrives in a stable and successful environment at Orlando Pirates and consistently contributes to the team’s performance. In contrast, Duba faces continued adversity and uncertainty at Kaizer Chiefs as he endures a tumultuous period marked by coaching changes and a lack of silverware. Despite these challenges, both players show immense talent and potential, making their journeys compelling stories to follow as they develop and shape the future of South African football.
