78-year-old man shot during road rage incident in Akron

AKRON, Ohio (WOIO) – A 39-year-old man was arrested following a roadside shooting Thursday afternoon in Akron.

Officers responded to the area of ​​East Market and South Arlington streets around 4:15 pm for a shooting.

When officers arrived, they found a 78-year-old man with a gunshot wound.

According to police, the victim was taken to nearby Summa Health Akron City Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

According to initial information, there was a minor accident involving two vehicles on East Market Street. Both vehicles were traveling east when the victim’s vehicle sideswiped the other vehicle involved, causing minor damage. After the collision, the driver of the other car, a 39-year-old man, fired several shots, hitting the victim on one occasion. After the shooting, the suspect left the scene.

Minutes later, officers were told the shooter was at a residence in the 700 block of Ravenswood Avenue. Officers responded to that location and detained the suspect without incident. They then took him to the police station for questioning.

The suspect was identified as Jon Jenkins, who was charged with felony assault and transported to the Summit County Jail, where he was booked.

At least one firearm was recovered.
