If you’ve been browsing your Facebook account since Tuesday, you may have noticed that some of your friends blocked their profile photos.

As reported by USA TODAYThis “symbolic gesture” began circulating on social media after Tuesday’s presidential election, in which former President Donald Trump was re-elected for a second term.

Although the trend of black or white profile photos has circulated on social media in the past for various reasons, this time men and women across the country would be participating in protest against Trump’s election.

“Since the recent election, many have chosen this blacked-out profile as a form of protest against the election results,” one person wrote in a mail On Facebook. “This simple gesture is a way to express dissatisfaction and solidarity with others who feel the same way about the outcome.”

Why do people cross out their profile photos?

The movement to block social media profiles has circulated the Internet several times in recent years, each time for a different reason.

As reported by USA TODAYThe trend began on Facebook in 2018, when women saw the action as a way to “highlight the experience of being silenced and a visual way to show others what the world would be like without women for a day.”
