DANBURY, Conn. – Caroline Ellison, former senior executive of Sam Bankman-Frito Fallen cryptocurrency empire FTX began its two-year prison sentence on Thursday for its role in a fraud that cost investors, lenders and customers billions of dollars.

Ellison, 30, reported to the federal prison in Danbury, Connecticut, according to the Federal Bureau of Prisons. She pleaded guilty and testified extensively against Bankman-Fried, her ex-boyfriend, before he was convicted and sentenced to 25 years in prison.

Ellison could have faced decades in prison, but both the judge and prosecutors said he deserved credit for his cooperation. In his sentencing hearing In September in New York, she tearfully apologized and said she was “deeply ashamed.”

Ellison was CEO of Alameda Research, a cryptocurrency hedge fund controlled by Bankman-Fried. FTX was one of the most popular cryptocurrency exchanges in the world, known for its Super Bowl television advertisement and his extensive lobbying campaign in Washington, before it collapsed in 2022.

U.S. prosecutors accused Bankman-Fried and other top executives of raiding client stock market accounts for risky investments, making millions of dollars in illegal political donations, bribing Chinese officials and buying luxury real estate in the Caribbean.
