Pedestrian and cycling route inaugurated that links universities

Updated plans for a pedestrian and cycle route linking three universities to central Leeds have been revealed.

Leeds City Council said improvements to the “key artery” between Hyde Park and the city center would provide students and other residents with new cycle lanes, bus stops, pavements, junctions and public spaces.

The £20.9 million scheme aimed to improve journeys for those using sustainable transport along Woodhouse Lane, Blenheim Terrace, Blenheim Walk and Albion Street.

A further consultation on the 2km route, which passes through the University of Leeds, Leeds Beckett University and Leeds University of the Arts, is due to take place until December 17.

A previous public survey found concerns about cyclist safety along the route, as well as pedestrians experiencing difficulty crossing busy streets.

The scheme is being run in partnership with the West Yorkshire Combined Authority, with the majority of funding coming from the City Region Sustainable Transport Deal.

Councilor Jonathan Pryor, deputy leader of the council, said: “Its current design makes it unsafe for all road users, but especially those walking, cycling or cycling.

“The plans will not only improve the look of the area and create new public spaces for people to enjoy, but will transform the way people get around.”
