Manchester United are preparing to enter a brave new world, but not until the November international break.

A deal for Ruben Amorim to take over at Old Trafford has been sealed but not yet delivered, and Sporting CP have successfully pushed to retain their manager for a further two weeks.

That means Ruud van Nistelrooy will be on the United bench for the third time when PAOK visit Manchester in the Europa League on Thursday. Van Nistelrooy will lead the team one last time against Leicester City this weekend.

The Dutchman no doubt hoped that a successful spell as interim manager would increase his chances of landing the full-time job. Having previously been the main man at PSV, he surely only agreed to return to Old Trafford as an assistant because he felt there might be a more important vacancy sooner rather than later.

But to the club’s credit, United acted quickly and decisively following the sacking of Erik ten Hag last week, and Amorim was very quickly announced as their next boss.

That has left Van Nistelrooy in limbo. Nobody knows if he will continue to be part of Amorim’s coaching staff and the answer will not come until next week at the earliest.

For now, Van Nistelrooy has the task of preparing the team for the visit of PAOK on matchday four of the Europa League.

It is not an insignificant encounter. United have two points in the renewed league phase after disappointing draws with Twente, Porto and Fenerbahce. If they want to finish in the top eight and avoid the knockout play-offs, United need to start getting some wins soon.

Van Nistelrooy did just that in his first game in charge, as the Red Devils beat Leicester 5-2 in the EFL Cup. But Sunday’s 1-1 draw against Chelsea brought a more disappointing performance, as United huffed and puffed without showing much quality.

Amorim will watch from Lisbon as he prepares to inherit a team currently 13th in the Premier League and 21st in the Europa League. The Portuguese hopes United’s position in both tables will have improved when he takes charge on Monday.

United are struggling at both ends of the pitch. Wasteful results explain much of their poor performance in recent months, but the Red Devils also appear vulnerable defensively.

That’s good news for Hojlund, who has gone four games without scoring since his last effort against Brentford.
