Gautier City Council approves city-wide leisure and recreation district

GAUTIER, Miss. (WLOX) – Soon, Gautier businesses will allow customers to go out with alcoholic beverages thanks to the establishment of a citywide entertainment and recreation district.

The ordinance passed by the city council on Tuesday states that alcoholic beverages must be limited to one person, less than a gallon and in a paper or plastic container.

Gautier is the latest Jackson County city to adopt an entertainment and recreation district. However, it is the only municipal ordinance in the county.

Mayor Casey Vaughan explains that this is an incentive for economic development.

“I felt, as mayor of Gautier and where we are and how the city is designed, I felt like it’s best that we adopt it for the entire city so we don’t turn anyone away,” Mayor Vaughan said. Nobody is influenced by one company over another. “They all have the same ability to offer this to the citizens of Gautier and the guests who visit Gautier.”

The leisure and recreation district will take effect 30 days after its approval.

Mayor Vaughan adds that this is something the city needed to check off its list as it continues to grow.
