Giants AFLW team reveals ’emotional toll’ following men’s post-season job scandal

GWS coach Cam Bernasconi has revealed the emotional turmoil facing the Giants AFLW team following the recent behavior of the club’s men’s side.

The side’s preparation for their week eight match against Hawthorn in Frankston on Saturday was largely overshadowed by the fallout from the men’s post-season function, which brought sexist skits and inappropriate costumes.

The AFL on Thursday imposed suspensions or fines on thirteen current and former Giants AFL players.

The league said their behavior at last month’s meeting was “completely unacceptable”.

Six were suspended, with Josh Fahey given the longest ban of four matches after dressing up as former NRL player Jarryd Hayne and simulating “inappropriate acts on a sex doll”.

Toby Greene was one of seven players fined $5,000, with the Giants captain among those punished by the AFL for showing a lack of leadership and failing to stop the performance of the skits .

“The whole AFLW program was very disappointed with the actions that took place and that ripples through the footy club.

“I was really proud of how the girls were able to get through that this week and then come out (and play competitively against the Hawks).

“There is a big emotional toll that is not just on the playing group, but on everyone within the football club because of the actions that have happened.

“You probably see a lot of emotional fatigue late in the game, but I was so proud that they came out and played a strong brand of football.”

On Thursday, Giants AFLW captain Rebecca Beeson expressed her disappointment at the behavior of the men’s players.

“It is important that we let it be known that we were deeply hurt and angry when we learned of the behavior that took place,” Beeson said in a club statement.

“Playing the game we love gives us a platform to talk to the community, fans and young people.

“As an AFLW playing group, we feel it is extremely important to emphasize that behavior that includes references to gender-based violence is completely unacceptable in all circumstances.

“The values of respect, diversity and inclusivity are just as important off the field as they are off the field.

“We look forward to the AFL playing group learning from this incident and as a club we are united in ensuring everyone feels safe within our game.”
