Marquette and Middleton finish work to prepare for semifinal rematch on Thursday

Half of tomorrow’s semi-finals are officially set. After dropping the first set, Marquette reeled off three straight sets to move on with a hard-fought 17-25, 25-21, 25-17, 25-20 victory over No. 7 seed New Berlin United. Defending state champion Middleton did the same to No. 6 seed Westosha Central in the same session with a 25-14, 25-21, 19-25, 25-20 victory to eliminate the Falcons.

The Hilltoppers and Cardinals will meet for the fourth time this season. Marquette won two of the three meetings with Middleton, but the Cardinals won the most recent game with a 3-0 sweep on Oct. 22 before the postseason began. Statistics and some quotes from these matches will be published in the post-match press conferences at the Resch Center.

WC continues to fight, but time is running out

After trailing 17-12 in the fourth set, the Falcons take the next three points on a kill by Zac Hanusek, an error by Middleton and an ace by Jude Gehrke to force a Cardinal timeout at 17-15. On the other court, Marquette and New Berlin United are locked in a 14-14 duel in set 4. Things are getting tight on both courts once again.

Marquette takes control, Westosha Central keeps season alive

The Hilltoppers are one set away from Thursday’s semifinals. Marquette defeated New Berlin United in the third set, 25-17. Three different Hilltoppers have 10+ kills in the match, led by Aidan Del Fava’s 11. Raj Dihora leads NBU with 11 assists. Marquette leads NBU in overall assists, 40-17.

On the other court, Westosha Central withstood a late Middleton comeback in the third set to win and keep its season alive, 25-19. Austin Rynberg leads with 10 kills, while Graham Foerster is up to 21 assists for the Falcons. Caden Van Buren leads Middleton with 14 kills and Bryce Stuttgen still leads everyone with 25 of the Cardinals’ 27 assists in the game.

Marquette closes to 2-1 lead, WC tries to hold on in third set

The Hilltoppers hold a 22-15 lead in the third, but after taking a 20-13 lead in their match with Middleton, Westosha Central tries to hold on and force a fourth set to keep their season alive with a 20-16 lead .

Marquette storm ahead

After trailing 7-5 in the third set, the Hilltoppers force NBU to call a timeout and take an 11-7 lead. Drew Blonski leads Marquette with 10 kills, followed by Aidan Del Fava and Sam Becker with nine each. Elijah Cannon and Devin McRae each have five kills for NBU.

Westosha Central has some life

They’re not dead yet. The Falcons win 10 of the 15 third set points to force a timeout for Middleton with WC holding a 10-5 lead. Forerster has had as many as 16 assists for Westosha Central and Nicki Virre has increased her kill tally to six. Meanwhile, on Court 2, Marquette holds a 10-7 lead over New Berlin United in Set 3.

Danger Zone for Westosha Central

Middleton is now firmly in control with a 2-0 lead as the two programs head into the third set. The wheels fell off for the Falcons after taking an 18-15 lead in the second set. They were outscored 10-3 to close the set and now face elimination heading into the third set. Austin Rynberg continues to lead the Falcons with seven kills and teammate Graham Foerster leads with 13 assists. Caden Van Buren remains the match leader with 10 kills. Bryce Stuttgen leads everyone with 18 assists so far.

Marquette hits back to tie the game 1-1

It wasn’t easy, but the Hilltoppers have done it again. After New Berlin United took the first set and with the teams tied 20-20 at the end of the second set, the Hilltoppers took five of the next six points to win, 25-21. Drew Blonski was huge for the Hilltoppers with three kills in that five-point stretch.

Westosha Central tries to avoid 0-2

The Falcons are fighting in set 2. It’s tied at 18 when Middleton uses a 3-0 run into a timeout that WC led 18-15 before the quick break. Austin Rynberg leads the Falcons with six kills. Caden Van Buren has 10 kills in 17 attacks so far.

Marquette finally finds some rhythm

Both matches are tied in the second set. Marquette makes it 16-14 after a 4-0 push to force a timeout by NBU coach Nicholas Maske. It hasn’t been pretty for the Hilltopper offense, which has already committed 18 errors in the game. Five different Toppers have killed, led by Aidan Del Fava. Raj Dihora leads NBU with six total assists so far.

Middleton takes first set at Westosha Central

The defending boys volleyball state champions won the opening game against No. 6 Westosha Central, 25-14. Caden Van Buren led the defending champions with seven kills, followed by teammate Vance Ferry with six. Austin Rynberg had four kills to lead the Falcons in the first set. Graham Foerster had eight assists for sixth place.

No. 7 leads No. 2 through a set

In a tough first set for the Hilltoppers, upstart New Berlin United takes the first set in the best-of-five matchup, 25-17. Jackson Susek scores a goal to finish off the first set for NBU. Marquette committed 12 errors with 11 assists, 10 of them from Asa Kloss alone. Braden Brochardt recorded a pair of kills in the set with three assists for Raj Dihora to give the Co-op an early 1-0 lead.

NBU extends early lead after tough offensive start for Marquette

After Cosson burned his first timeout for Marquette, seven of the next 11 points went to New Berlin United to force another Hilltopper timeout. It’s been a tough start for the second seed with eight errors in his first 12 total attacks so far. NBU leads Marquette, 14-6.

No. 7 New Berlin United takes early 7-2 lead over No. 2 Marquette

After the two teams traded the first five points of the contest, NBU goes on a quick 4-0 run to force the first timeout of the game by Marquette coach Jake Cosson, with his team down five points in the first set. This is the kind of start the underdog Eisenhower/West Co-op needed against the state-experienced Hilltoppers. A service error by Aiden Del Fava and three attack errors have the seventh seed on top from the start.

About the #1-seeded Sussex Hamilton Men’s Volleyball Team

For the first time in program history, the Chargers are one of the bottom eight in the state. The week could be special for the Sussex community, as both the boys and girls programs have qualified for state, with the girls placing second in the Division 1 bracket. On the boys side, the Chargers have basically been the best team in the state all season with 36 wins in 40 total games and will enter Wednesday’s quarterfinals as the overall No. 1 seed.

About the No. 2 Marquette men’s volleyball team

With their appearance this week at state, it marks the 23rd consecutive state tournament the Hilltoppers have qualified for, tying the record for total appearances set by Kaukauna. The No. 2 seed Hilltoppers have only won the state crown twice since 2015, which seems like a tough stretch for one of the state’s historically great programs in any sport. A title this weekend would mark the 11th total in program history, extending its own record.

About the No. 3 Middleton boys volleyball team

The Cardinals are the defending champions and are in their 15th state tournament and fourth in the last five seasons. They reached the state tournament with a 25-21, 25-13, 25-21 victory over Madison West in the sectional final. Middleton is the champion of the Big Eight Conference.

About the No. 4 Germantown Boys Volleyball Team

For the first time since 2019, the Warhawks are back on the state stage. The last time before this week the Warhawks were in state was when they reached the tournament three consecutive years from 2017 to 2019, winning their only state title in 2018. Germantown is also the third of three representatives from the Greater Metro Conference that play this weekend, matching the total of three Classic 8 Conference programs (Arrowhead, Kettle Moraine, Waukesha co-op) in last year’s state tournament.

About the No. 5-seeded Appleton North boys volleyball team

The Lightning are making their ninth appearance in the state tournament, and second in three seasons, after defeating Kimberly in the sectional final, 25-19, 29-31, 26-24, 15-25, 19-17. Appleton North began the season with just one player, junior Nathan Ramus, with varsity experience. The Lightning, who won the state title in 2012, placed third in the Fox Valley Association this season.

About the No. 6-seeded Westosha Central boys volleyball team

For the sixth time in program history and the first since 2021, the Falcons are among the final eight teams playing. The last time they played in the state tournament, they finished as runners-up in the tournament.

About the No. 7-seeded New Berlin United Men’s Volleyball Team

Will it be paradise for the New Berlin cooperative for the seventh time? They return to state this week for the seventh time overall and first since the 2020 tournament. It took all five sets last weekend, but the co-op eliminated 2023 qualifier Franklin in the sectional final to return to state. He hasn’t lost a game since October 10.

About the No. 8-seeded Kenosha Indian Trail Men’s Volleyball Team

For the fifth time, all since 2015, the Kenosha Indian Trail returns to the state. The Hawks eliminated Oak Creek in straight sets in the sectional final to return to the round of 16 for the first time in three postseasons.
