JACKSON COUNTY, MI – While voters across the United States have elected Donald J. Trump as the 47th president, local voters in Jackson County also made decisions in state and local races.

In the general election on Tuesday, Nov. 5, residents voted for and against operating Millages for the Jackson County Jail, Jackson District Library and Jackson College. They also selected candidates for township, city council and school board positions, and determined who should represent Jackson County in the Michigan House of Representatives and the U.S. House and Senate.

Tim Walberg wins reelection to US House seat representing Jackson County

U.S. Rep. Tim Walberg was elected to serve another term in Congress, covering Jackson County, in the general election on Tuesday, November 5. The Associated Press declared Walberg, R-Tipton, the winner in the 5th District, defeating Democratic candidate Libbi Urban of Buchanan and Green Party candidate James Bronke of Cassopolis.

House races:

Districts 45 and 46: Voters elect Kathy Schmaltz to second term in Jackson County state House seat

In District 45, which covers parts of Jackson County, Sarah Lightner, R-Springport, was declared the winner. Lightner received 68.6% of the vote. Democrat Marshall Doug Murch has 31.4%, according to the Associated Press, with 73% of the votes counted.

Additionally, Rep. Kathy Schmaltz, R-Jackson, was elected to another two-year term in House District 46, which covers the city of Jackson and parts of Jackson and Washtenaw counties, including Chelsea.

He defeated Daniel Mahoney, D-Jackson, who is Jackson’s mayor. Schmaltz received 52.1% of the vote, while Mahoney received 47.9%, according to the Associated Press.

District 47 and 48: Democrats win state House races in Ann Arbor area, including key swing district

In District 47, state Rep. Carrie Rheingans, D-Ann Arbor, won a second term with 62% of the vote against Republican Teresa Spiegelberg, who got 37%, and the Green Party’s Aaron Wright, who got 1 .8%, with the majority of the votes. counted.

State Rep. Jennifer Conlin, D-Ann Arbor Township, also kept her seat in District 48, a swing district that stretches from the north side of Ann Arbor to the Howell area and into Jackson County.

Voters elect Cierra Sowle to remain Jackson County’s top elections official

Voters selected Cierra Sowle as Jackson County Clerk, meaning she will retain the position she was appointed to after the previous clerk retired.

Sowle, a Republican, defeated Democrat Sabrina Brownlow.

Jackson County selects new probate judge in tight race

Jennifer M. Kelly defeated her opponent Bill Rappleye in the general election. He will assume the judicial seat vacated by outgoing Judge Diane Rappleye, former wife of Bill Rappleye.

Kelly, who won with 54% of the vote, won the election by 5,055 votes, according to county election results.

Incumbents were victorious in each of the four contested races for Jackson County Board of Commissioners seats. This includes candidates in Districts 3, 6, 7 and 8. Each winning candidate will now represent their districts for a four-year term.

Jackson County Jail millage operation fails for third time, by 973 votes

Jackson County law enforcement is in budget jeopardy after a third attempt to approve $1 million, enough to maintain operations at the jail and sheriff’s office, failed again.

It was a close race. The vote failed by 973 votes, of which 36,978 said yes and 37,951 said no, according to election results yet to be certified.

Jackson College millage fails with voters for 17th straight time

Jackson College’s most recent attempt to restore the millage has failed with voters, marking the 17th failed proposal since 1964. The proposal on the Nov. 5 ballot failed with 40,439 votes against to 33,464 votes in favor.

Newcomer to fill District 5 Jackson City Council seat

A new council member will fill the District 5 seat on the Jackson City Council. District residents have elected candidate Christy Davis.

He received 749 votes, while his opponent Todd Moore received 470, according to Jackson County election results.

Challenger defeats long-time incumbent for Jackson College trustee position

A former member of the Jackson College Board of Trustees lost his seat in the Nov. 5 general election, marking the end of an 18-year term on the board.

Current board president John Crist placed third in the race for two six-year terms on the board. 12-year incumbent Donna Lake received 29,678 votes, followed by newcomer Danielle Mackey with 28,975 votes and Crist with 27,108 votes.

In addition to the two open regular seats, voters were also asked to decide who would fill the two-year partial term created when Sam Barnes left the board in November. Current starter Teshna Thomas he retained his seat against challenger DR Hammontree.

A trio of newcomers each earned a spot on the Jackson Public School Board in the Nov. 5 election.

In a hotly contested race involving 10 candidates vying for three soon-to-be-vacant board seats, Subba Reddy, Alaina Sharp and Cheryl Simonetti garnered enough voter support to be future board members.

Newcomers fill several positions on Jackson County school board

Several Jackson County school boards will appoint new members next year, as several newcomers challenged and defeated incumbents in the Nov. 5 election.

The boards of the School District of Columbia, Springport Public Schools and Grass Lake Community Schools will have at least one new member in early 2025.

The final selection that determines who is the village president in Brooklyn could depend on who has the most luck on their side.

Of a total of 638 votes cast in the Nov. 5 general election, incumbent Brooklyn Village President Terry Mahr and his challenger Estella Roberts each won 319 votes, ending the election in a tie, according to the unofficial election results yet to be certified.
