New York is an incongruous state. We are home to fabulous wealth (if the state were a country, it would have the 10th largest economy in the world), but also the highest rate of wealth inequality. We are among the most diverse, but also among the most segregated. We passed the most ambitious climate law in the country, but we have failed to meet its deadlines and continue to subsidize industries that accelerate the climate crisis.

As the only nonprofit news publication in all of New York State, our journalism exists to help you make sense of these contradictions. Our work examines how power works in the state, examines who really makes the decisions, and reveals how dark decisions shape the lives of ordinary New Yorkers.

Over the past two decades, the number of local media outlets in New York has been cut nearly in half, allowing elected officials and powerful individuals to increasingly operate in the dark, unbeknownst to the average New Yorker. .

We are on a mission to change that. Our work has already shown what can happen when those in power know someone is watching, with stories that have sparked policy changes and spurred legislation. We have ambitious plans for the rest of the year and beyond, including tackling new beats and stronger stories, but we need your help to make them a reality.
