JACKSON, miss. – A man in Mississippi died after hot asphalt was dumped on him, authorities say.

Jackson police said officers responded to a call about an accident earlier this week at AJ Materials on East McDowell Road.

Officers said they arrived to find an unidentified man buried under hot asphalt.

Police Chief Joseph Wade said there appeared to be a malfunction with a dump truck. Wade said it appeared the victim tried to fix the problem when the asphalt began to spill.

“My prayers, condolences, thoughts, my heart goes out to his family,” Wade told reporters at a news conference.

Wade said his department is conducting a death investigation, but it appears to be an accident. They’re reviewing surveillance videos.
