NHRC marks milestone amid controversy: advocating for human rights

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) celebrated its 31st anniversary with a major event in New Delhi, addressing key human rights issues. Acting Chairman Vijaya Bharathi Sayani highlighted the role of the NHRC in addressing numerous violations, including the contentious Sandeshkhali sexual harassment case linked to the political tensions in West Bengal.

Sayani underlined the achievements of the NHRC, which includes handling over 23 lakh cases since its inception. In its recent work, the commission has resolved 68,867 complaints and recommended significant financial assistance for victims. The NHRC aims to uplift marginalized groups and enshrine dignity and rights as a social cornerstone.

A national conference on the rights of the elderly was also held where Sayani emphasized the need for effective implementation of laws and schemes to support the elderly. Issues such as affordable healthcare, social security and protection against age discrimination remain priorities for the NHRC.
