Premier League clubs take legal action to seek compensation: if Manchester City loses case

Manchester City are currently hearing their Premier League case, with 115 alleged rule breaches.

The alleged violations include failing to provide accurate financial information during nine different seasons.

As well as failing to provide full details on player remuneration over six seasons from 2010-11 to 2015-16, it also failed to provide full details on manager Roberto Mancini’s remuneration over the four seasons he was at the club from 2009 to 2013.

If he is found guilty of some or all of these alleged violations, we will wait to see what the possible punishments would be. From significant fines to the deduction of points and even relegation as possibilities.

However, The Times has now reported that things could get even worse for Manchester City if rules breaches are proven to have occurred.

Several Premier League clubs have now reserved the right to claim compensation from Manchester City.

Manchester City was finally charged with the 115 alleged breaches in February 2023. However, it was in 2018 when German publication Der Spiegel had the exclusive on the leaked documents, from which the allegations of alleged breaches finally emerged.

Premier League clubs had been advised by their legal team to reserve their right to seek compensation against Manchester City now, as it was felt that if they did not do so by early November 2024 there was a possibility of it being exhausted. A six-year statute of limitations on legal claims could prevent them from doing so. If you do not register it now, you reserve your right to seek compensation if Manchester City are found guilty.

Now that they also recorded three straight defeats on the field last week, there will no doubt be plenty of speculation as to whether Manchester City are seeing their dominance of late on and off the field finally crumble.

The times report – November 5, 2024:

“Several Premier League clubs have reserved the right to demand compensation from Manchester City for 115 alleged breaches of club rules before Tuesday’s deadline.

The action has been advised by lawyers even before the outcome of the case, as there is a potential six-year statute of limitations dating back to November 5, 2018, when a German website first published the Football Leaks documents.

If the serious charges against City are proven, clubs could claim for loss of income from missing out on the league title or European competitions over several seasons, which could amount to hundreds of millions of pounds.

Clubs cannot sue each other through the courts under Premier League rules, but can do so through arbitration under Rule X.

Lawyers are understood to have warned clubs that if they waited until the outcome of the hearing into the 115 alleged rule breaches, there would be a risk of any compensation claim being deemed untimely.
