Fani Willis wins re-election against former Trump administration intern

Fulton County, Georgia, District Attorney Fani Willis, known for her prosecution of former President Donald Trump, will win re-election as top prosecutor in Georgia’s most populous county, the Associated Press projects.

Willis rose to prominence in 2021 when he launched an investigation into Trump and his allies for their efforts to overturn the 2020 presidential election. His office indicted Trump and 18 other defendants in 2023, ahead of a year of legal challenges against the accusations of a possible conflict of interest involving Willis and prosecutor Nathan Wade.

Former Trump administration intern Courtney Kramer, an Atlanta-area attorney, unsuccessfully challenged Willis for her position. Kramer describes herself on her campaign website as specializing in “political and electoral law,” adding that she is “an active advocate for election integrity.”

Willis’ victory comes on the heels of a turbulent day for his constituents. Fulton County voting centers were the target of bomb threats on Tuesday, forcing officials to delay voting. Georgia Secretary of State BradRaffensperger said the threats originated in Russia.

“It looks like they’re up to mischief,” Raffensperger said. “They don’t want us to have fluid, fair and precise elections.”

Neighboring DeKalb County was the target of more bomb threats later that same day. Police had to sweep five DeKalb County voting centers after the threats were made.
