Man arrested at NKY polling place for disorderly conduct

HEBRON, Ky. (WXIX) – A Northern Kentucky man was arrested on Election Day and charged with four violations, including ballot removal and disorderly conduct.

On November 5, around 1:19 p.m., the Boone County Sheriff’s Department was called to the Thornewilde Elementary School polling place in Hebron after election officials reported an intoxicated man was behaving in a disorderly manner, according to a Boone County uniform citation.

The report says this all started when a man identified as Kevin Wedemeyer was “troubling his address.”

After trying to calm Wedemeyer down, an officer says he finally calmed down in a corner of the school cafeteria.

A poll worker approached Wedemeyer, asked him what he needed help with, and helped him verify his address and obtain an official ballot, the citation states.

When a Boone County sheriff’s deputy arrived, he says he witnessed Wedemeyer yelling, “Let’s vote,” causing a disturbance to other voters.

After obtaining his ballot, Wedemeyer “scribbled outside the boxes on his ballot and crumpled it, then attempted to hand it in,” according to the report.

An election official told Wedemeyer that the machine would not accept his ballot because of missing and wrinkled marks, the citation said.

The Boone County Sheriff’s Department reports that Wedemery became upset and left the polling place with the official ballot in hand.

An election official chased him and Wedemeyer allegedly said he had been drinking vodka.

The sheriff’s department noted that Wedemeyer “appeared disheveled with bloodshot eyes, was unsteady on his feet, and was unable to follow simple instructions.”

Wedemeyer was arrested and charged with disorderly conduct, drinking alcohol in a public place, public intoxication and removing or altering ballots, jail records show.

The sheriff’s department reported that Wedemeyer had previous felony convictions in 2002 and 2004 in Missouri.
