Lawyers on both sides of Karen Read’s case have asked that her retrial be delayed by three months, as prosecutors said they want to reanalyze evidence and prepare to call new witnesses.

Read, 44, is scheduled to face trial for the second time in the case that accuses her of, while intoxicated, running over her boyfriend, a Boston police officer, John O’Keefe, in January 2022, and leaving him to die in the snow.

His new trial is scheduled for January 27 after the first. ended with a hung jury during the summer.

However, on Monday prosecutors filed a motion, with Read’s consent, asking Norfolk County Superior Court Judge Beverly Cannone to delay the retrial until April 1.

Special Assistant Prosecutor Hank Brennan said in the two-page filing that the office plans to “reanalyze the forensic evidence” and call new expert witnesses “who did not testify in the first trial,” all of which will take time to prepare.

Read’s team said it will then “need time to consider and potentially respond” “possibly with its own additional experts,” the document says.

Cannone has yet to approve the postponement request, which he likely will do given that both sides have agreed to it.

Read faces charges of second-degree murder, leaving the scene of a death and involuntary manslaughter in O’Keefe’s killing, to which he has steadfastly maintained his innocence.

The trial ended with a deadlocked jury on July 1 in the case that gained something of a cult following of supporters of Read’s innocence.

Read’s attorneys told jurors that their client was the victim of a police cover-up to conceal that O’Keefe was actually killed in a fight with fellow officers after Read dropped him off at Trooper Brian’s home in Canton, Massachusetts. Albert.

judge cannon denied Read’s offer to have fired charges of murder and leaving the scene of a death on the grounds that several jurors supposedly got ahead to the defense team claiming that they actually intended to acquit Read of those charges.

The prosecutor’s office and Read’s attorneys did not immediately respond to requests for comment Tuesday morning.
