Beggars in this Indian smart city earn Rs 2 lakh a month: reports

The average monthly income in India will reportedly be Rs 32,000 in 2024. This implies that half of the Indian population earns less than Rs 32,000 every month, while the other half earns more than the average income. According to a Business Standard report, the average monthly income of a salaried person in urban India in 2023 was Rs 21,647. However, did you know what the monthly income of a beggar in an Indian Smart City could be? What if it is Rs 2 lakh a month? Sounds shocking, right?

We usually come across beggars begging at temples, traffic junctions or any other crowded place. However, it is certainly shocking to know that the annual income of beggars in Hyderabad is estimated to be between Rs 18 and Rs 24 lakh on average. Some families are dedicated to this profession full time and are said to have complete control over traffic crossings.
in the three commissions: Hyderabad, Cyberabad and Rachakonda.

This shocking report came to light in 2023 after police spoke to some beggars. Following a crackdown on the ‘beggar mafia’ in Hyderabad, police arrested some families of beggars.

An official of the Hyderabad Commissionerate Task Force revealed that the entire family, including husband, wife, four to five children and the elderly, take care of the crossings. They do not allow others to seek alms there. These beggar families head to remunerative junctions like Paradise, Jubilee Hills Checkpost, KBR Park, Masab Tank, Abid Road, Tank Bund, Koti Women’s College, Chandrayangutta and Mehdipatnam.

They (the beggars) distribute the crosses among themselves and the elders intervene when a dispute arises. After discussions, they come to an amicable solution and allocate time slots or crossovers between the groups.

The official also reported that they arrived at the crossings in the morning around 10 a.m. and begged until nightfall. They travel in autorickshaws. On returning, they carry packets of liquor or toddy and biryani after pocketing a costly sum. Furthermore, many of them are engaged in the money lending business.

Furthermore, attracted by the income of these beggars, some unscrupulous people began operating mafias and employed disabled, weak and elderly people, children and women.

At the end of the day, they paid 200 rupees to each of their “recruits”, in addition to providing them with food and accommodation.

According to earlier reports, the Jubilee Hills police arrested a man identified as Ajit Pawar (28). He owned eight vehicles which were seized and a couple of houses in Karnataka. He had employed 23 people, including children. The police learned that he invested in the checking fund business with the income of beggars from his mafia begging gang that he runs.
