How to check if your vote was counted

Once you vote In a presidential or midterm election, how can you verify that your ballot has been counted? This answer varies depending on where you live and how you voted.

There is no standardized national system to track whether a ballot was counted. The vote tracking landscape is a “mess, because there are 50 different systems, and within each of those 50 systems, there are county recorders, so they all have slightly different methods,” said Jessica Levinson, a professor and expert on electoral laws at Loyola Law School.

When you vote in person, you can see your vote being submitted and it’s “a fair bet” that your vote will count, Levinson said. As such, no states offer ballot tracking for in-person voting.

But when you send your vote by mailyou don’t see it being processed and there’s more chance of mistakes being made, so most states offer some type of confirmation for those ballots.

“People are concerned about mail-in voting because they’re not the ones who physically put it in someone’s hands or put it in the box, and I think that’s why the tracking is much stronger,” Levinson said.

Generally, most mail-in votes end up counting. More than 98% were counted and only 0.8% were rejected in the 2020 general election, according to a survey by the Federal Electoral Assistance Commission.

Among the most common reasons ballots were rejected were that the signature on the ballot does not match the registered signature; the ballot was missing an important document, such as an affidavit; the voter was not actually eligible to vote in his jurisdiction; the ballot was not received on time; or the ballot lacked the voter’s signature.

Sometimes people can only vote a provisional ballot at your polling place, and these ballots often need tracking by the voter or election officials. If this happens to you, you can ask your local elections official to explain how you can check whether your provisional vote was counted or rejected (some states’ processes are listed below).
