State regulators find doors left open at the daycare where the toddler walked into traffic

GREENVILLE, N.C. (WITN) – State regulators say they have discovered more safety issues at a Greenville daycare where a child was allowed to wander onto a busy street two months ago.

The Department of Health and Human Services has not yet released any findings about what happened to Marley Burgess at KinderCare on August 13.

The 3-year-old was found in the middle of Stantonsburg Road by a passing driver who stopped and pulled him to safety.

Records show DHHS staff have made at least three unannounced visits to the daycare since that happened. They found violations on two of them.

The latest violation was discovered during a visit last Wednesday. DHHS says that during a food truck delivery, both the front door and the lobby door were open with no one supervising.

During an unannounced visit on September 24, DHHS found an employee sleeping while caring for the children and a photo was taken on September 17. KinderCare said the teacher no longer worked at the facility.

The DHHS has not yet said when the investigation into the wandering child will be completed.
