Smithers added there would be a knock-on effect on job creation, a reduction in future investment and an impact on the council’s ability to attract more visitors to the region.

The local authority said it intended to “present the strongest possible case” and will “urge” the government to reconsider its withdrawal of funding.

A spokesperson for the Department of Levelling, Housing and Communities said: “This Government inherited £22 billion of unfunded spending commitments and we have therefore been forced to make the difficult decision to review these previously announced projects.

“Growth is this Government’s number one priority, which is why the Budget confirmed more than £3bn of investment in local growth for next year.”
