Voter in the United Kingdom ‘terrified’ by the electoral legal battle in the United States, while up to 4,000 ballots are challenged in Pennsylvania | US News

According to the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), up to 4,000 people who voted abroad in the US elections are being questioned in Pennsylvania, a key battleground state.

They include Selma Aldi, 47, from Camden in the north. London who received a letter on Sunday explaining that his vote in the united states presidential elections you run the risk of being rejected.

“It was a shock,” he said. “It was terrifying to be attacked, to potentially lose a right that I consider very important. It’s even the feeling that someone is questioning my identity.”

A letter from Dauphin County election officials outlines the legal challenge. It says: “The applicant is not registered to vote and therefore is not eligible to vote in Pennsylvania.

“Under Pennsylvania law, it is a felony to allow anyone who is not registered to vote.”

A hearing on the legal appeal is scheduled for Friday, in which Aldi will be able to respond.

About 2.8 million U.S. citizens living abroad have the right to vote in elections, no matter where they are on Election Day.

But each state has different procedures and rules for how to send and receive election paperwork.

But Ari Savitzky, a senior attorney at the ACLU, said “any attempt to challenge (voters’) eligibility is a clear violation of their rights.”

He told Sky News: “There have been between 3,000 and 4,000 challenges to absentee voting by US citizens living abroad in Pennsylvania.

“For decades, federal law has guaranteed the right of American citizens living abroad to vote in federal elections in their last residence in the United States.

“In addition to being baseless in law, these challenges are an abuse of voters and election administrators.”

Deborah Hinchey of another voting rights group, All Voting is Local, said: “Election deniers across Pennsylvania have filed thousands of massive challenges to foreign voters.

“They want to block as many ballots as possible and silence our voices… but these baseless challenges have failed before and the proper checks and balances are in place to ensure they fail again,” he added.
