Community shocked after abandoned baby found in Springfield

SPRINGFIELD, MA (WGGB/WSHM) – Nearly 48 hours after the discovery of a baby abandoned on the porch of a Springfield apartment, neighbors were still grappling with the news Thursday as police continued to search for clues to help in the baby’s parents find it.

The baby boy is in stable condition at Baystate Medical Center, but Springfield police are now focusing on finding the child’s parents to ensure they get the resources they need at this time. Meanwhile, shock continues to be felt across the city after a week-old boy, clothed and wrapped in a blanket, was found abandoned in his Worthington Street apartment on Tuesday evening.

“Tuesday night was a very cold night,” said one Springfield resident. “I was upset, I was angry.”

Western Mass News spoke with one person, who told us he lives near the apartment where the child was found.

“I have a lot of brothers and sisters and they’re small, so that’s unthinkable,” said the Springfield resident.

Springfield Police Department spokesman Ryan Walsh told us the baby is doing well and detectives hope a parent or family member will come forward.

‘No one wants to press charges against you. We just want to make sure the baby is safe and finds a good home,” Walsh explained.

While police are still investigating what led to the baby’s abandonment, Walsh reiterated a message to anyone who has felt overwhelmed by the responsibility of having a baby.

“Talk to someone you trust first, but if you ultimately have to surrender your child for some reason, do so at one of the appropriate places: the hospital, the police, the fire department,” Walsh added.
