Charlotte Hornets forward Grant Williams has reportedly apologized to Jayson Tatum for fouling his former teammate.

According Gary Washburn of The Boston GlobeWilliams and Tatum had a conversation after the Boston Celtics’ 113-103 win over the Hornets on Friday.

“According to an NBA source, the two spoke after Friday’s game, and Williams apologized for the harsh foul,” Washburn wrote. “At first, Tatum did not want to speak to reporters for the second night in a row; he eventually agreed, but did not want to talk about Williams or the incident.”

After the Celtics pulled away in the fourth quarter and held a nine-point lead with about two minutes remaining, Williams collided with Tatum in transition, sending the five-time All-Star onto the floor. Tatum was not injured, but Williams received a flagrant foul on 2 and expelled of the game.

While Tatum refused to address the play, his Celtics teammate Jaylen Brown did not consider the foul to be involuntary.

“He hit it like it was a football play,” Brown said, according to the Associated Press (h/t ESPN). “Like, Ray Lewis crossing the middle or something. It is what it is. Grant knows better than that.”

Williams and Tatum spent four years together in Boston from the 2019-20 season through the team’s 2022-23 campaign. Both players helped the Celtics reach the NBA Finals in 2022.

While emotions seemed to run high during Boston’s win over Charlotte, Williams made sure to express his regret to his former teammate for committing the flagrant foul after the final buzzer sounded.
