Portrait of an Afghanistan veteran unveiled in Doncaster

A portrait of one of the most seriously injured British soldiers to survive the war in Afghanistan has been unveiled in his hometown.

Lance Bombardier Ben Parkinson lost both legs when his Land Rover hit a mine while serving in the army in 2006.

The fundraiser and activist has since become a well-known figure in Doncaster and his painting will hang in the Danum Library, Gallery and Museum to honor his bravery.

Doncaster Mayor Ros Jones said: “I am delighted that the portrait is now part of our collection and we can recognize Ben’s achievements with this work of art.”

The image, commissioned by Friends of Doncaster Museum, will remain a permanent exhibition at the art gallery.

In 2013, Parkinson was awarded the MBE at a ceremony at Buckingham Palace.

Jones added: “Ben has accomplished a lot since he was seriously injured while serving our country. I hope that anyone who views the portrait can find some inspiration and encouragement if they are experiencing their own challenges in life.”
