The drone heading to HMP Liverpool contained cannabis resin, mobile phones, banknotes and SIM cards

A man was later arrested.

A drone heading towards HMP Liverpool contained cannabis resin, a mobile phone and notes. Just before 12.30am on Monday 4 November, staff reported seeing a drone attempting to land in the prison yard before flying towards the field between Stuart Road and Maguire Road.

Officers attended the field with police dog Ike from the canine unit where the drone was found. The field was contained by officersbefore they let 18-month-old Ike off the leash.


Ike located the drone’s remote control before using the scent to direct his attention to the operator, who was found by Ike hiding in a bush. Tobacco, drill bits and SIM cards were also found in the package.

A 34-year-old man of no fixed address was arrested on suspicion of transporting a prohibited article into a prison and possession of a prohibited firearm, possession with intent to supply a controlled Class A drug (cocaine) and possession with intent to supply a Class B controlled drug (cannabis). He has been detained for questioning.


Detective Chief Inspector Jordan Quinn said: “With the help of PD Ike’s excellent work and keen nose, our officers acted quickly based on information provided by prison staff to intercept the suspect and seize a drone. Merseyside Police will continue to search proactive ways to combat illegal trafficking. use of drones through technology and ultimately with information from the communities.

“We continue to work in partnership with HM Prison Service to keep the prison community and members of the wider Merseyside community safe, and we urge anyone with information about those operating drones in this way to contact the police.” .
