A West Bengal court has framed charges against rape and murder accused Sanjoy Roy RG Kar. Roy has been taken into custody as a suspect in the Brutal rape and murder of a trainee doctor. at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital at the end of his night shift.

The court has also stipulated that the trial will begin on November 11.

The gruesome rape and murder of the trainee doctor sparked riots across the country. There were protests across the country, including by medical professionals, demanding better workplace safety conditions.

Notably, the Supreme Court took suo moto cognizance of the issue and emphasized the need to increase the safety of medical professionals as well as improve workplace conditions.

The investigation of the case was handed over by the state police to the CBI, by the Calcutta High Court. The CBI found Roy to be the only accused in the case, while it also arrested former director Sandip Ghosh for his alleged complicity in the crime.
