According to a report, the deceased teenager was a 12th grade student.

Eastern Cape police spokesperson Siphokazi Mawisa said the shooting occurred in the early hours of Sunday morning.

He said the circumstances surrounding the incident will form part of the investigation.

Mawisa said the case was referred to IPID, which investigates incidents involving members of the police.

No further details were provided.

The incident comes immediately after two unknown suspects allegedly robbed and raped five Matric students.

The enrollees were robbed at gunpoint in the Mqhekezweni administrative area on Thursday last week.

The incident took place while students were preparing for their final matric exams on Wednesday.
