The Penguin: How Did Ozwald Cobblepot’s Brothers Die?

HBO’s The Penguin made some significant changes to the names and even characters from the original DC story. Oswald Cobblepot has three brothers in the comics, but the TV series made changes here too, and we meet two brothers of the twisted DC villain with changed names: Benny and Jack. In previous episodes of The Penguin, we often see Oz avoiding talking about his brothers. He also warned Victor not to mention them in front of his mother. Penguin episode 7 finally reveals how the children die and it doesn’t match what Oz told us about their deaths.

Oz locks his brothers in the sewer and leaves them to drown. In episode 7 of The Penguin, we see a young Oz, his older brother Jack, and Benny, the youngest. The flashback clearly shows that Oz was always Francis’ most loving and protective son. Seeing his mother working even on the weekend, Oz asks her to watch a movie with him, but she ignores him because she has a lot of work to do. When Jack and Benny enter the room, Francis is distracted, so he asks the former to go out with his brothers for a while. Initially, Oz denies it because he wants to help Francis, but when his mother insists on him, the boy cannot deny it.

Jack, Benny and Oz come Rex Calabrese on the streets, and when Jack approaches him, the mobster gives him 50 dollars. He also asks about Francis before leaving. Oz cannot hide his excitement after seeing Rex, as he admires him a lot. After that, the boys decide to play Lantern Tags in the dark tunnel. Benny asks Oz to count to 10 before hunting them. Oz does the same and begins hunting the boys.

Oz discovers that Jack and Benny are hiding in the sewer. After trying a little, Oz takes it as a humiliation and thinks that his brothers are intentionally hiding in a place he can’t reach due to his clubfoot. He closes them and heads home. After arriving, when Francis questions him about Benny and Jack, Oz lies to him. Oz’s brothers definitely died too young in the series, and Oz made that decision when he was just a child. He couldn’t think of any consequences for what he had done at that time, but now he carries that guilt in his heart.
