Man arrested for carelessly firing a rifle in Anderson

A man was arrested Oct. 29 for negligent discharge of a firearm in Anderson.

The Anderson Police Department (APD) says around 4:16 p.m., officers were called to the area of South Barney and Locust Road after someone called to report a shirtless man walking barefoot in the area with a rifle on his back.

On Barney Street at Marx Way, officers found a man matching the description, later identified as Jose Antonio Pena Alvarado, 32, of Cottonwood, with a loaded .22 caliber rifle tied to his pants with rope.

Authorities say Peña Alvarado was very drunk and only spoke Spanish. The officers were able to converse minimally with him, getting him to comply with the orders. Officers formed a contact team and used a ballistic shield to safely detain Pena Alvarado.

While officers were on the scene, another person called to report hearing Peña Alvarado fire a round from the rifle near South Barney Street and I-5 before reloading it and walking north toward the location where he was found.

Pena Alvarado was arrested and booked into the Shasta County Jail on charges related to public intoxication, carrying a loaded firearm, and negligent discharge of a firearm.
