A GROUP of 10 children “shooting” fireworks through a letterbox left the occupants of a house in a Limerick city suburb “terrified”.

One of those inside the property at the time said that if no one was home, a spark could have ignited a coat near the door and started a fire.

The incident occurred on a farm property in Mungret on Saturday, October 26 after 9 p.m.

One of the people in the house took to the social media site Reddit to say that a group of about 10 children placed cookies in a mailbox and exploded them.

“The impact was so strong that the steel cover of my mailbox flew into my house and caused damage. This surprised and bothered me. Why do children behave like this? What can be done to stop it? ask.

Limerick Live contacted the author, who wished to remain anonymous.

“It was terrifying. The women inside were very scared and even started crying,” said the man in his 30s.

He saw about 10 children run away, but he is not sure of their exact ages.

“The mailbox cover exploded inside the house and hit a wall about three meters away. “We had a jacket hanging on a nearby wall and a small spark could have easily started a fire, which could have caused unimaginable damage,” he added.

The man said they reported the matter to gardai.

“The guard mentioned that incidents like this are unfortunately common, especially around Halloween.”

The owner is implementing additional safety measures following advice from Gardai.

“We have sealed the lid of the mailbox. We also informed our neighbors and they have sealed theirs as well. “We are thinking about installing CCTV or a ring camera,” he concluded.
