SLED warns South Carolina voters not to take ballot selfies

GREENVILLE, SC (FOX Carolina) – The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) warns voters not to take selfies with ballots on Election Day.

SLED reminds voters that ballot photography is prohibited in South Carolina.

Voters also cannot use any type of camera in the voting booth.

The exact South Carolina law prohibiting ballot photography can be read here:

SECTION 7-25-100. Allowing viewing of the ballot, removing the ballot from the polling place, improper assistance and related crimes.

(A) It is unlawful in any election for a voter:

(1) allow your ballot to be viewed by any person, except as provided by law;

(2) taking, removing, or attempting to take or remove a ballot from the polling place before the polls close;

(3) place a mark on your ballot by which you can be identified;

(4) bring a mechanical device to the polling place that allows you to mark your ballot; either

(5) remain longer than the specified time permitted by law in the booth or compartment after you have been notified that your time has expired and you have been requested to leave the compartment or booth by a manager.

(B) It is unlawful for a person to:

(1) interfering with a voter who is inside the polling place or is marking his or her ballot;

(2) improperly influence or attempt to improperly influence a voter in the preparation of his or her ballot;

(3) attempting to induce a voter to show how he or she marks or has marked his or her ballot; either

(4) assist or attempt to assist a voter by means of any mechanical device in marking his or her ballot. (C) A person who violates the provisions of this section is guilty of a misdemeanor and, upon conviction, must be fined not more than one hundred dollars or imprisoned not more than one year.
