Cynthia Erivo calls poster ‘bad’, fan edits ‘offensive’

No one let Cynthia Erivo go on Archive of Our Own. Maybe she’ll come across a story with the logline, “Elphaba doesn’t like to be disturbed when she’s hard at work, but Glinda has other plans,” tagged “Dom/sub.” The actress disagreed with a fan-made version of the Bad poster which is closer to the original Broadway version on October 16 on her Instagram Story. “This is the wildest, most offensive thing I have ever seen,” she posted in response to the edit, originally made by X user @midosommar. Erivo explained her intention behind the changes to the movie poster, including the new-found eye contact, saying: “I am a real human being, who chose to (sick) look down the barrel of the camera at you, the viewer… because we communicate without words with our eyes. She additionally claimed that “editing my face and hiding my eyes means erasing me. And that is just very painful.”

@midosommar, the creator of the edit, responded to Erivo’s post in a tweet. “My original intention for the poster was not malicious in any way – it was an edit I made in 10 minutes to pay tribute to the original poster and did not intend for it to blow up like that,” he wrote. “I have deleted the original post out of respect for Cynthia.”

In her Instagram Story, Erivo also lambasted the long-standing trend of people posting photos of Elphaba and Galinda interacting in some way with the caption “Is your pussy green?” and an AI-created video of the two fighting. “None of this is funny,” she wrote. “None of this is cute.” We wonder what she thinks about the color change Bad-macaroni and cheese theme now.
