House Republican rejects Trump, writes Ron DeSantis for president – and himself for VP

  • Rep. Thomas Massie, a Republican from Kentucky, did not vote for Trump.

  • Instead, he wrote in Ron DeSantis – and entered his own name for VP.

  • Massie has long clashed with Trump, despite being a conservative Republican.

Rep. Thomas Massie, a maverick libertarian who represents a deep-red district in Kentucky, will not vote for former President Donald Trump in the 2024 election.

Massie posted a photo of his ballot at X on Tuesday, showing that he had written Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis for president — and himself for vice president.

He also suggested he wouldn’t have done so if Trump wasn’t guaranteed to win Kentucky.

“I do NOT recommend this,” Massie wrote, “unless you are in a state where the outcome has already been determined.”

It is not entirely surprising that Massie would refuse to cast his vote for Trump.

The two have had a somewhat tortured relationship, with the former president calling for the Kentucky congressman to be expelled from the Republican Party after he halted a vote on a COVID relief package in March 2020.

Massie was one of a handful of Republicans in the House of Representatives to back DeSantis during the 2024 GOP presidential primaries, and he has declined to formally endorse Trump since he became the nominee.

The Kentucky congressman has also long been a thorn in the side of the Republican Party at large.

In May, he teamed up with Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene in an unsuccessful effort to oust Mike Johnson from the presidency, an effort driven in part by Johnson’s decision to let the House vote on aid to Ukraine.
