Man Utd ‘very concerned about signing Amorim favourites’ with four Sporting stars on shortlist

Man Utd are reportedly looking to avoid the same mistake they made with Erik ten Hag when Ruben Amorim takes over next week.

The Red Devils sacked Ten Hag on Monday before moving quickly to appoint his successor in the form of Sporting Lisbon coach Amorim on Friday.

Amorim will officially begin work on November 11, once his work at Sporting Lisbon has finished, and the Portuguese coach will enjoy the entire international break to prepare his team for the match against Ipswich Town on November 24.

There were several reasons why Ten Hag eventually lost his job at Manchester United but signing players he knew didn’t seem to help his cause.

Andre Onana, Matthijs De Ligt, Lisandro Martínez, Antony and Noussair Mazraoui all worked with Ten Hag at Ajax before joining the Dutchman at Man Utd during his two years at Old Trafford.

Dutch internationals Joshua Zirkzee and Tyrell Malacia were also signed by Ten Hag and there are rumors that Amorim wants some of his Sporting stars to join him at Old Trafford.

Soccer insider information affirm that The sporting quartet ‘Viktor Gyokeres, Gonçalo Inacio, Ousmane Diomande and Marcus Edwards are on a long list of possible signings’ at Man Utd.

The report adds:

“However, sources say that Erik ten Hag’s policy of signing former players is unlikely to be repeated, and that the transfer team at Old Trafford will make the decisions.”

“Although Amorim will have some influence on the club’s transfer activity and is expected to look to reunite with some former stars, he will not have the full say.

“The board is said to be aware of the mistakes made under Ten Hag and wish to avoid making the same mistakes again.”

And former Everton chairman Keith Wyness insists Man Utd will be “very concerned” about bringing in any of Amorim’s former players.

Wyness said Soccer insider information: “They will be very concerned about bringing Amorim’s favorites.

“This is where Ashworth and Jason Wilcox have to make money. They have to implement Man United’s cohesive style behind the scenes.

“It cannot be based solely on the coach’s opinion. Obviously, Amorim is a talented coach, but he must realize that he is only part of the bigger picture.

“They have to try to avoid making the same mistakes they made with Ten Hag.

“If something goes wrong with Amorim, they can’t lose all the players they bring.”

Gyokeres has been in incredible form for Sporting since arriving there from Championship side Coventry City, but Arsenal legend Paul Merson insists teams should think carefully before signing the Sweden international.

Merson said sportskeeda: “I was in Portugal last year and they speak very highly of Ruben Amorim. He is a good coach, but what he has done there in Portugal is, at the end of the day, a three-team league. This will be a completely different challenge.

“Now they are talking about bringing in Viktor Gyokeres. Honestly, this is what bothers me. He was playing for Coventry a while ago and nobody wanted him. Now he goes to a lower league, does well and suddenly you have to pay an extra £40-50m for him.

“Imagine if he was still at Coventry and United wanted him? “Everyone will lose their minds.”
