Bulldogs stifle Gators in second-half comeback

play

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A distressing situation georgia football Saturday’s win keeps the No. 2 Bulldogs’ season moving forward.

The rojinegros came out of a complicated first half to come back and defeat the crocodiles34-20, with two touchdowns to solidify it in the fourth quarter by Dwight Phillips Jr. and Dominic Lovett. Nate Fraizer and Cash Jones scored the other two touchdowns, both also in the second half.

The Bulldogs will finish their conference schedule in old miss next Saturday, with kickoff scheduled for 3:30 p.m. on ABC.

Before the game

An upset at Florida as a two-plus touchdown underdog would breathe new life into Billy Napier’s three seasons in Gainesville.

The annual rivalry game, broadcast nationally this time on ABC, returns to EverBank Stadium with half of the seats designated for Bulldog fans and the other half for Gators fans.

“I’d probably say it’s personal,” Georgia senior wide receiver Arian Smith said. “You know it’s going to be a physical game, so obviously it feels like a good win when we come out of there and our fans are there cheering us on and you see the other side clear out.”

Two Georgia secondary starters, safety Dan Jackson and nickel back Joenel Aguero, will miss the first half as suspensions for second-half targeting calls at Texas.

That is expected to propel KJ Bolden, Buford’s five-star rookie safety, into the starting lineup.

“The biggest thing for him is to realize that you’ve been doing it for a while,” safety Malaki Starks said. “A beginning is a beginning no matter how you look at it. He’s been playing really well this year and just needs to go out there and be himself. …He is a great athlete. He wants it so much. I have no doubt he can go out and do his thing.

Georgia escapes a disastrous first half and rallies to beat Florida, 34-20. The Bulldogs will finish their 2024 season road schedule next Saturday at Ole Miss. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:30 pm on ABC. From then on they will be home.

Georgia lined up at the 7-yard line and got a two-play touchdown from Dwight Phillips Jr., who made the 4-yard run to add padding to the score. Georgia now leads 34-20, almost surviving a scare in Jacksonville with 3:03 left on the clock.

A 21-yard pass from Carson Beck to Lawson Luckie and then a short 7-yard run from Nate Frazier sets up a Dominic Lovett touchdown as Georgia takes the lead again. Georgia is up 27-20 now with 4:01 left in the game.

Florida’s Ja’Kobi Jackson scored a 15-yard rushing touchdown to tie the game 20-20 with 7:29 left on the clock.

Florida was set for a field goal to take the lead when it ran into trouble with the snap and the ball rolled for a 31-yard loss to the Florida 36 before being recovered by Jalon Walker.

Georgia’s drive lasted three plays when Carson Beck found Cash Jones for a 22-yard touchdown pass. Georgia now leads 20-13 in the final minute of the third quarter.

Thanks to a solid 11-yard reception from Dillon Bell, Nate Fraizer scored the Bulldogs’ first touchdown of the night on an opener. He was flagged for unsportsmanlike conduct after the play for taunting by doing the trademark “Gator chomp.” Georgia tied it 13-13 with 7:01 left in the third quarter.

Florida drove 40 yards and got a 53-yard Trey Smack field goal with 3 seconds left in the first half. Florida leads at the half 13-6.

Georgia closed the Gators’ lead to 10-6 on Peyton Woodring’s 53-yard field goal with 43 seconds left in the first half.

Florida rookie quarterback DJ Lagway was carted off the field after a run in the second quarter. He was on the field with a possible hamstring injury.

Lagway is seen as the future of the Gators. He was 2 of 6 for 47 yards and a touchdown on Saturday.

Aidan Warner replaced Lagway. Starter Graham Mertz missed the entire season with a knee injury.

Florida drove 37 yards and got a 32-yard Trey Smack field goal after Carson Beck’s second interception.

The Gators lead 10-3 with 7:22 left in the first half.

Carson Beck forced a pass into double coverage for his ninth interception, and Florida needed just one play to score points.

DJ Lagway connected on a 43-yard pass to Aidan Mizell, beating Malaki Starks with KJ Bolden also back in coverage. Florida leads 7-3 with 13:42 left in the second quarter.

Georgia’s star safety serves as a punt returner for an injured Anthony Evans.

Starks fielded two punts in the first quarter, returning his second 9 yards.

Peyton Woodring’s 23-yard field goal put Georgia up 3-0 with 2:10 left in the first quarter. The Bulldogs stalled in the red zone and settled for 3 after a 13-play, 83-yard drive in 6 minutes, 15 seconds. A Carson Beck pass on third down was rejected at the line.

tComte Ratledge is playing right guard for the injured Micah Morris.

Tate Ratledge was working at second-team right guard behind Micah Morris, who started the final four games while Ratledge was sidelined after TightRope surgery for a sprained ankle.

“He’s had a tough road because of the injuries,” coach Kirby Smart said Thursday night on his radio show. “He has fought to overcome it. I’m amazed at how quickly he’s been able to recover from a very significant injury in TightRope. He worked very hard; He was aggressive in his rehabilitation. He’s come back quicker than we thought in terms of being able to contribute and play. “We still have to see where he is and how he is doing before the game.”

Georgia offensive coordinator Mike Bobo was on the field a moment ago chatting with Florida’s tight ends coach and co-offensive coordinator. Russ Callawayson of Neil Callaway, with whom Bobo worked when he was first on Mark Richt’s coaching staff. Callaway graduated from Oconee County.

Georgia offensive guard Tate Ratledge (ankle) and defensive lineman Jordan Hall (legs) moved from probably to not listed on the SEC’s final availability report. So at least they are available to play.

In a game in an NFL stadium, representatives from nine NFL teams are credited. They include the Panthers, Bears, Cowboys, Jaguars (easy ride), Rams, Dolphins, Patriots, Jets and Commanders.

Georgia offensive guard Tate Ratledge is one of four game captains as it appears he will be available to return after missing four games with an ankle injury. The other captains are Carson Beck in his return to his hometown of Jacksonville, Chad Chambliss and CJ Allen.

Coach Kirby Smart said of Ratledge on SEC Network this morning: “We’re hoping he can play at least some role.”

In a video interview with SEC Network’s SEC Nation show Saturday morning, Kirby Smart talked about being without Dan Jackson for the first half due to the targeting suspension.

“Dan is a critical man,” Smart said. “He keeps everyone on the same page, communicates across the board. He and Malaki have been best friends for three years. We will be without him for half. The good news is that we played against KJ Bolden, a young player and “Really talented, all year long. He’s rotated and played a lot of football. In our opinion, he’s a starter, so we’re representing a guy who’s played a lot of plays.”

In case you were wondering, Matt Loeffler is not the referee today. It’s Daniel Gautreaux. Loeffler, who led the team for Georgia-Texas with the controversial reverse pass interference call, did not work a game last week, but the SEC did not say that was due to any discipline.

This section will be updated when the game starts.
