Kiwi ferns hit orchids and set up final Jillaroos clash

New Zealand will play archrival Australia in the Pacific Cup women’s final after a comprehensive 36-0 victory over Papua New Guinea in Port Moresby.

Sunday’s win was highlighted by a hat-trick from winger Mackenzie Wiki on his debut for the Kiwi Ferns after previously representing the Cook Islands.

The daughter of Kiwi legend Ruben Wiki showed off the blistering speed she has shown for Canberra in the NRLW.

New Zealand defend their title as Pacific Cup champions after defeating the Jillaroos in last year’s final and will try to retain their crown on Sunday in Sydney.

It’s not all doom and gloom for the PNG Orchids, who will play Pacific Bowl winners Samoa in what will be a promotion and relegation clash. The winner will play in the Pacific Cup’s top flight of the Pacific Championship next year.

Ferns number 6 Gayle Broughton was involved in all three first-half tries against the Orchids, where her passing, running and vision came to the fore.

PNG defended enthusiastically from the start and did well to restrict the Ferns to one try before a drinks break midway through the first half.

The Brisbane Broncos connection of Gayle Broughton and Mele Hufanga combined with precision to send in winger Leianne Tufuga.

It was the same duo involved in the creation of Tufuga’s second attempt.

Broughton ghosted across the park and put forward Angelina Teakaraanga-Katoa under the posts for a 16-0 half-time lead.

The second half belonged to Wiki who scored his tries with excellent positional play, balance and speed.

Hufanga was a handful all afternoon and while the Orchids attacked her, the star center was able to set up her supports with slippery hands. A whirlwind race led to Wiki’s final attempt.

The hosts were led brilliantly by Parramatta prop Elsie Albert, who came close to scoring on several occasions only to be denied by the desperate Kiwi Ferns defence.
