ROANOKE, Va. (WDBJ) – Repetition and multi-sensory instruction are among the techniques Learning & Behavior Specialists in Salem uses to teach students with dyslexia.

“We want them to see, say, hear, feel and do it all at the same time,” says owner and director Wendy Wall.

October is Dyslexia Awareness Month.

Although the cause of dyslexia remains a mystery, she says a child can show symptoms as early as infancy.

“So dyslexia can affect reading, spelling and writing, and we see that children have difficulty manipulating sounds, like knowing the words bat and cat and things like that,” says Wall.

Wall explains that dyslexia is neurobiological in nature and often runs in families.

“Parents who know their children or know that their family has had problems in the past, perhaps a mother, a father or an uncle, and who has had problems, and if the child shows that he or she has developmental delays in speech and language, then there are red flags,” says Wall.

As with other learning challenges, early intervention is critical to preparing children for future success.

“It’s really nice to see that if we do the right things early on, these people flourish and do very well as adults,” says Wall.
